Nutanix is a startup that went public in 2016. They provide a SaaS platform to seamlessly manage data center infrastructure.
was the process of setting up app-based security rules within a company's firewall. Admins needed a way to whitelist which machines and IP addresses on the network could communicate with other machines.
I designed all the UX concepts that led to the final design artifact. In this project, all my work was strictly UX focused, as I collaborated with a visual designer to produce the final high-fidelity artifact.
I uncovered the complexities that come with configuring network security. There was nuanced and/or logic, countless inputs and fields to configure, and no way to understand who was talking to who without a visual. Thus, I chose a visual approach to help improve comprehension.
to break the workflow down into less complex steps, I improved the second iteration of the design. We added intelligent detection of communication paths to show the user suggested rules based on existing communication paths. This would enable users to more clearly see what rules to apply to their environment.
IT administrators revealed an enhanced comprehension of security rules. Every single one after undergoing a sample rule creation task understood which virtual machines they had just allowed to communicate.
